The Flaws in FAO's New Measurements of Hunger

From the Editors

In this Policy Brief, forthcoming in the Fall issue, leading international development specialists critique the methodology used in 2012 by FAO to count the world's hungry. The new measurements, they argue, underestimate the extent of hunger, are not sensitive to regional and country-specific variations, and obscure important policy lessons.

The Brief is published under First View and will be accessible for free through September 2013.

The FAO's report The State of Food Insecurity in the World 2012 can be found here. In March 2013 FAO's launched a pilot project that uses experience-based indicators of hunger.
