Harvard Graduate Conference on Political Theory

October 18-19, 2013
The Department of Government (FAS) at Harvard University will host a conference for graduate students in political theory and political philosophy October 18-19, 2013 at the Center for Government and International Studies (CGIS). There will be opening remarks by a faculty member of the Government Department and a keynote address by Professor Sharon Krause of Brown University.
Papers on any theme or topic within political theory—from the history of political thought to contemporary normative theory—will be considered. The conference will allow graduate theorists to present their work to peers in an ecumenical setting. Presenters will be drawn from graduate programs across the country, and hopefully the world. A general graduate-student conference in political theory such as this is one of the very few of its kind in the United States.

Please limit each submission to 7,500 words (about 20 double spaced pages). Essays longer than 10,000 words will not be considered. Each submission should include two PDF files: one with the paper formatted for blind review (free of personal and institutional information) and the other including a cover page with the title of the paper, an abstract (250 words max) and your name, email address, and institutional affiliation.

The Austin Graduate Ethics and Normativity Talks

The University of Texas at Austin will host a conference on October 18-19, 2013 for graduate students focusing on philosophies related to ethics, value, and normativity. There will be and a keynote address by Professor Allan Gibbard, the Richard B. Brandt Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, University of Michigan.
Papers on any theme or topic within normative philosophy—for example, normative ethics, metaethics, applied ethics, history of ethics, political philosophy, aesthetics, normativity and value in language, logic, metaphysics, epistemology, etc.—will be considered.

NATO Cooperative Cyber Defense Centre of Excellence: "Ethics of Cyber Conflict"

The workshop will be a two-day event organized by the NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence and chaired by Dr Mariarosaria Taddeo, Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Warwick. The event will gather ethicists, experts in military studies, policymakers and experts in cyber security to discuss the ethical problems caused by cyber conflicts.
Contributions to the workshop will address issues concerning the way information control technologies (ICTs) affect our ethical views of conflicts and warfare. Additionally, the conference will analyze and scrutinize just-war principles in the light of the dissemination of cyber conflicts; attribution and proportionality of the response to cyber-attacks; moral permissibility of automated responses and questions regarding the ethical deployment of military robotic weapons.
