2017 Winter Global Public Policy Symposium

The themes of this conference are concerned with the emerging issues in the contemporary society. Some of the key challenges of the present include security, civil society, environment and sustainability, leadership and legitimacy. The academic community, government, business community and civil society must rise to these challenges. This gives rise to the ethical dimension of the current discussions in economics, politics and social. POLITSCI ’17/International Political Science Conference

The conference aims to constitute a forum for prolific exchanges between different theoretical perspectives, interests and concerns prevalent within political science. Presently the world is witnessing a series of radical transformations in the political sphere; the debate about the great transformation of the 2010s is focusing on the process of authoritarianization on the one hand, and on social and political resistance movements on the other. Political Economy of International Organizations

The PEIO conference brings together economists, political scientists and other scholars to address political-economy issues related to any international organization, including the World Trade Organization, the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European Union, and also other international organizations that have as yet received less attention in the academic literature. Questions we seek to address include how IOs are organized and governed, what are the incentives of governments dealing with IOs as well as the incentives of the bureaucrats who staff them, and what are the effects of IOs on policy outcomes. We will also consider the interaction of IOs with transnational actors such as commercial lobbies and NGOs. Finally, we have a particular interest in the interaction of the international political economy with the domestic political economy of IO members.

2018 PHISO International Conference: “Re-thinking Regions in Global International Relations”

Acharya’s (2014, 2016) calls toward a Global International Relations (IR) research agenda stressed the importance of area studies as a source of new concepts and perspectives in IR. The essential objective of which is to accommodate marginalized identities into mainstream IR theoretical discourses. While the desire for economic development and peace were key justifications for the institutionalization of regions during the Cold War, the increasing emphasis on identities and civilizations in world politics suggests that regions are expected to move ‘beyond’ their primary material basis to ideational forms of interaction. This has manifested in the attempts to explore what would constitute, for example, an ASEAN identity. At the same time, these processes involve the reimagining of pre-colonial identities and the networks of sub- and non-state actors that shape identities outside of the confines of the Westphalian state and institutionalized political regions, necessitating critical engagement with the epistemological and ontological assumptions of International Relations. In this conference, we would like to explore such connections.

The 2018 Africa Conference will critically examine Africa’s political leadership and extant institutions vis-à-vis the continent’s history of underdevelopment, present challenges, and future trajectories within the global political economy. Scholars are invited to interrogate the nature and evolution of leadership and institutions in Africa from the pre-colonial era to contemporary times. Institutions in this context are broadly defined to include formal and informal institutions, including history, traditions and culture of the people. Is it leadership that shapes institutions or do institutions determine the quality of leaders that emerge? How can African states achieve the leadership and institutional transformation necessary to address the perennial development challenges of the continent? Are there lessons that could be drawn from the experiences of the pre-colonial era to inform contemporary issues of leadership? Power of Rules and Rule of Power:Many approaches to understanding international politics begin with the observation that international politics operates in a condition of anarchy, and that this creates fundamentally different interactions than those we witness in domestic politics. Yet, despite the lack of a formal government, the international system operates through a vast web of rules– formal and informal, explicit and implicit. While powerful actors may have disproportionate influence in the creation, maintenance, and contestation of rules, explicit and implicit rules also influence notions of power and serve as sources of power. There is an endogenous, mutually constitutive, relationship between power and rules.
Our 2018 conference theme seeks to understand the relative and relational influence of power and rules in international politics. While the interaction between power and rules characterizes the subject we study, it also characterizes the international studies profession. We invite proposals that address and problematize power structures, rules, and norms in our discipline, our universities, and our professional associations as well as in international interactions.

Founded in 1948 as a forum on world affairs, the CWA expanded rapidly in its early years and now encompasses the arts, media, science, technology, politics, business, human rights, and more. The event reaches viewers throughout Colorado and the nation as well through livestreaming and video and audio recordings, archived over many decades. Gender Inequality: It's about Time

Food in the Global Welfare State: Consumer Subsidies as Social Protection Conference

Hosted by the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs at Harvard University. As a first step towards gaining a better understanding of the role of consumer subsidies in the global welfare state, this conference will bring together political scientists and sociologists who specialize in consumer subsidy programs and welfare in each of the regions where these programs have been important. (In other words, every region except western Europe.) The goal will be to formulate a shared comparative framework. By asking the participants to review the literature on this topic for each region, we seek to identify the most important variation in subsidy policies and their welfare outcomes, as well as to identify key country cases. We will primarily focus on food subsidy programs, since they have diffused more widely and have proven to be especially durable. Furthermore, we will focus on the period defined by the transnational campaign that began in the 1980s to reform these subsidy programs. This planning conference will set the stage for a larger conference the following year.
International Conference on Pervasive Powers: Corporate Authority in the Shaping of Public Policy

The role of corporate organizations in the shaping of public policy has been a classical subject of interest in sociology and political science. Since the seminal work of C. Wright Mills, Elmer E. Schattschneider, Peter Bachrach and Morton S. Baratz in the fifties and sixties, it has fuelled much research on the interactions between economic, administrative and political elites, on the production of decisions or “non-decisions”, and on inequalities of access to political power. Yet, although these issues have played a key part in the development of sociological and political science studies on issues of power, many of them no longer receive any attention, especially in public policy analysis. The Conference will welcome scholars from various fields of the social sciences (sociology, history, political science, science & technology studies…). We may cover travel expenses, in accordance with the budget of the conference.

2018 European Society of International Law Conference

The 2018 conference will take a hard and unflinching look at the multitude of roles and functions played by universality in international legal discourses as well as the in its associated narratives of progress and virtues. In doing so, it will provide a critical appraisal of the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion that comes with international law and its universalist discursive strategies. This will require that universality is not reduced to the question of the geographical outreach of international law but, instead, is understood in terms of boundaries. This will also entail examining how the idea universality – which does not lend itself to a translation in all languages – was developed in some of the dominant vernaculars of international law – primarily English and French – before being universalised and imposed upon international lawyers from all traditions. This will simultaneously be offer an opportunity to revisit the ideologies that constitute the identity of international lawyers today as well as the socialisation, reproduction, and legal education processes which they undergo to become international lawyers. Special attention will be paid to the place which Europe has secured for itself by virtue of the progress and historical narratives built around the idea of universality.
