2018 European Society of International Law Conference

The 2018 conference will take a hard and unflinching look at the multitude of roles and functions played by universality in international legal discourses as well as in its associated narratives of progress and virtues. In doing so, it will provide a critical appraisal of the mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion that comes with international law and its universalist discursive strategies. This will require that universality is not reduced to the question of the geographical outreach of international law but, instead, is understood in terms of boundaries. This will also entail examining how the idea universality – which does not lend itself to a translation in all languages – was developed in some of the dominant vernaculars of international law – primarily English and French – before being universalised and imposed upon international lawyers from all traditions. This will simultaneously offer an opportunity to revisit the ideologies that constitute the identity of international lawyers today as well as the socialisation, reproduction, and legal education processes which they undergo to become international lawyers. Special attention will be paid to the place which Europe has secured for itself by virtue of the progress and historical narratives built around the idea of universality.

40th Anniversary of China's Reform and Opening Up: Institutional Change and Reconfiguration of China's Political Economy

The year 2018 marks the 40th anniversary of the Third Plenum’s decisions on opening-up and reform (1978). The experimental integration of market elements into China’s centrally planned economy, sometimes classified as “Chinese variety of capitalism” or “Socialism with Chinese Characteristics”, is still an ongoing and dynamically evolving process. This conference seeks to undertake a systematic, theory-guided analysis of China’s socio-economic development path in retrospective and comparative perspective. During the past four decades, China’s economic system has evolved in a highly idiosyncratic fashion, in which bottom-up entrepreneurship and pressure for change have been as important as top-down decrees for economic development envisaged by the ruling party and government elite. Likewise, an increasingly intensive exposure to the global markets and its usances has resulted in institutional transplantations becoming a major stimulus for the design of the domestic socio-economic regime.

The 32nd Camden Conference: Is This China's Century?

2019 PHISO International Conference: "Praxes Turn in IR"

The study of international relations typically gravitates towards decrypting “axiomatic givens” such as state rationality, national interest or regional identity. Moreover, intellectual diversity tends to be ideational with paradigmatic clashes that generates synthesis from theoretical reason as epitomized, for instance, by the “neo-neo” debate following the realism-idealism face-off. Nevertheless, IR as a discipline is not bereft of alternative approaches to studying the international. Thus, from interrogating the discipline to rethinking regions in global IR context, this prolegomenous forum broaches the “practice turn” in IR, the approach of privileging pragmatic imperatives as evidence by analytical units’ proclivities and practices in relational conduct instead of foundational logics in IR scholarship. Thus, in presenting IR realities as products of practices instead of being preordained by theoretical reason, the approach encourages inter-paradigmatic dialogue, if not syncretism, rather than synthetization in understanding world politics. For this forum, particular attention will be given to culture as performance of practices.

19th Annual Africa Conference at the University of Texas at Austin

Africa’s intertwined historical trajectories signals at the imbricated nature of identities in the continent. At the same time, the politicization of different identities for the mobilization of diverse population groups adds another dimension to this complex terrain. The 2019 Africa Conference intends to critically examine the highly intricate and contested processes of identity formation and its significance for African societies. Furthermore, the conference will engage with discussions on identities that are intimately linked to notions of African diaspora across the Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean. The primary aim of the conference is to reflect on the varying and varied forms of social practices and processes through which identities are constructed, contested, negotiated, and reconfigured in relation to one another. Simultaneously, the conference intends to create an intellectual space for examining the politics of identity that systematically marginalizes, excludes, disempowers, and denudes certain social groups. 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Adran Gwleidyddiaeth Ryngwladol, Prifysogol Aberystwyth (Department of International Politics, University of Aberystwyth), the first department of international studies in the world. This anniversary provides an opportunity to critically reflect upon whether there is a distinctive discipline of British international studies, what that discipline might be, what kinds of stories we tell ourselves about it, and how those stories shape us as a collegium in relation to others? More particularly, such questions demand an engagement with the history of international studies within the United Kingdom and how the discipline connects to the practices of the British state. Attention is also drawn to what the discipline may be today and how it may change in response to the myriad worlds within which it is embedded, including the uncertainties of a post-Brexit environment, as well as changing configurations of governance and power in the international system. Thus, alongside traditional concerns of war, diplomacy, trade, and finance, the centennial is a good time to evaluate how well equipped international studies in the United Kingdom is to respond to the challenges of the Anthropocene, climate change, inequality, migration, questions of identity, ubiquitous surveillance, and a revival of imperial nostalgia. It is also an opportune moment to contemplate the pedagogy of international studies, the role of international studies within contemporary British universities, and the composition of our academy. Put bluntly, does international studies in the UK have the people, institutional support, inter- disciplinarity, methods, concepts, and theories to address the challenges of the next 100 years? If not, what is needed and necessary to address these challenges?
