2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Adran Gwleidyddiaeth Ryngwladol, Prifysogol Aberystwyth (Department of International Politics, University of Aberystwyth), the first department of international studies in the world. This anniversary provides an opportunity to critically reflect upon whether there is a distinctive discipline of British international studies, what that discipline might be, what kinds of stories we tell ourselves about it, and how those stories shape us as a collegium in relation to others? More particularly, such questions demand an engagement with the history of international studies within the United Kingdom and how the discipline connects to the practices of the British state. Attention is also drawn to what the discipline may be today and how it may change in response to the myriad worlds within which it is embedded, including the uncertainties of a post-Brexit environment, as well as changing configurations of governance and power in the international system. Thus, alongside traditional concerns of war, diplomacy, trade, and finance, the centennial is a good time to evaluate how well equipped international studies in the United Kingdom is to respond to the challenges of the Anthropocene, climate change, inequality, migration, questions of identity, ubiquitous surveillance, and a revival of imperial nostalgia. It is also an opportune moment to contemplate the pedagogy of international studies, the role of international studies within contemporary British universities, and the composition of our academy. Put bluntly, does international studies in the UK have the people, institutional support, inter-disciplinarity, methods, concepts, and theories to address the challenges of the next 100 years? If not, what is needed and necessary to address these challenges?
Pervasive Powers: Corporate Authority in the Shaping of Public Policy

ATINER was established in 1995 as an independent world member-based association of academics and researchers. Athens was chosen as the meeting place because of its long history and culture. ATINER’s mission is to act as a forum where academics and researchers from all over the world can meet and exchange ideas on their research, and discuss the future developments in their disciplines. ATINER aims to revive Athens’ long historical tradition by organizing and hosting international conferences and symposiums as well as promoting research and producing publications. The structural injustice framework has been used to discuss domestic political questions. But can it also be used to consider global social and political challenges? The guiding question of this conference is: Can the concept of structural injustice be fruitfully applied to global problems? For example, can the harms of climate change, forced displacement, gender inequality, economic inequality, etc., be understood as forms of structural injustice? Furthermore, can this framework help us to understand how we should ascribe responsibility for these global challenges? A particular focus of this conference will be minority rights.

Some of these questions include: What do we know about international relations as a result of women’s increased visibility in ISA? What measures can ISA take to further engage scholars from and in the Global South? Have some topics become less marginalized as a result of the increased empowerment of voices within ISA?
